Specific gravity of sand is determined using a pycnometer: the sample is weighed dry, then again with water added, allowing the volume of solids to be calculated from the mass of water displaced.
Specific gravity is used to convert between mass and volume in mix design calculations, and combined with water absorption gives a general picture of aggregate density and soundness.
