Los Angeles Abrasion Value
IS 2386 (Part 4)
A graded sample is placed in a rotating steel drum together with a charge of steel balls and rotated for 500 revolutions. The combined abrasive and impact action wears the aggregate down, and the percentage of material lost through a 1.7 mm sieve is the Los Angeles Abrasion Value.
Lower values indicate harder, more abrasion-resistant aggregate. This is a key acceptance test for aggregate used in road surface courses, which are subject to continuous traffic abrasion.
